Overview
Directive 2006/40/EC sets the requirements for EC or national type-approval of vehicles as regards emissions from, and the safe functioning of, air-conditioning systems fitted to vehicles. It also has provisions on retrofitting and refilling these systems.
From 1 January 2011, Member States no longer grant type-approval for vehicle types with an air-conditioning system designed to contain fluorinated greenhouse gases with a global warming potential higher than 150. From 1 January 2017 this also concerns new vehicles. According to EUR-Lex it is in force.
Scope
It applies to motor vehicles of categories M1 and N1. Under the Directive, category N1 is limited to vehicles of class I as described in Directive 70/220/EEC.
The regulation applies to the following vehicle categories:
M
Passenger vehicles
N
Goods vehicles
